A row of heat pumps in a garden

How loud is it?

A modern outdoor unit, a few metres away, makes about as much noise as a fridge. On cold nights, when it has to work hard, a bit more. There is a legal limit for the noise at the property boundary, and we take that into account in advance.

Where it goes wrong

Most complaints come from a unit screwed straight onto a wooden balcony or against a bedroom wall. The sound then travels through the structure. Rubber feet, a bit of distance and a clever position solve almost everything.

The myth

The idea that you hear a heat pump humming indoors is usually wrong. What you hear inside is often the circulation pump of the heating system. We can turn that down.
