How well insulated is your home?
This is the most important question. A heat pump heats with cooler water, around 45 degrees instead of 70. In a house that leaks heat, you end up with a cold living room. If you have double glazing, cavity wall insulation and an insulated roof, a heat pump can work well.
How much gas do you use now?
Get out your annual energy bill. If you use more than 1,200 cubic metres a year, a hybrid heat pump usually pays for itself within eight years. Under 800 cubic metres it takes so long that a new boiler is often the better choice.
What are your plans?
If you are moving in three years, an expensive installation is a waste. If you are about to insulate, do that first. If you choose a boiler now, pick a model that can work with a hybrid heat pump later.
